RA Sushi - Raising Breast Cancer Awareness

I was recently given news that our dear family friend Monica had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Suddenly the pink ribbon representing the cause to raise breast cancer awareness and fund breast cancer research took on a new meaning. The "cause" was replaced by a familiar beautiful face and it became painfully personal. My initial reaction was sadness followed by anger. I was angry that someone so wonderful had to deal with this major roadblock in her path. It wasn't until yesterday, while I was sitting at RA Sushi that I began to see the positive side to this.

Two weeks ago I sat a few tables away from where I was sitting and a brilliantly colored pink sheet grabbed my attention. In support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, RA Sushi was offering a Signature Pink Roll, of which 100% of the profits go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. While I admired and supported the sentiment I didn't feel compelled to order the roll. Yesterday however, I did. In two short weeks something in me changed and I had a vested interest in the cause.

If there is a silver lining to all of this, it is that when someone as loving, supportive and as giving as Monica meets, everyone whose lives she has touched will come out to help her tear that roadblock down. It is my hope that our support will ensure a clear path for the future.

Tomorrow she undergoes surgery. I hope she knows that even though I will not be there in person, I will be there in spirit and all of her family and friends are wishing her a very speedy recovery.

Over the course of a lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, thanks to a number of factors such as earlier detection, new treatments and a better understanding of the disease, breast cancer survival rates have increased tremendously.
